Information security updates and events from the past week
1 – The Los Angeles County Superior Court, which is actually the largest court in the United States, is suffering from a widespread ransomware attack.
Following the attack, all 36 courts throughout the district were closed, prisoner transfers were stopped, and evacuation orders were issued.
At this point, no infidel group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
2 – Pro-Palestinian attacker in 6-day DDoS attack on UAE bank
A denial of service (DDoS) attack targeting a financial institution in the United Arab Emirates set records for the duration of the cyber-attack and the volume of ongoing requests.
The attack – attributed to the pro-Palestinian activist group BlackMeta, also known as DarkMeta – lasted six days and involved multiple waves of web requests lasting between four and 20 hours, targeting the financial institution’s website.
In total, this wave lasted more than 100 hours in total, averaging 4.5 million requests per second, cybersecurity firm Radware said this week.
3 – 57,000 patients affected by Michigan Academic Medical Center data breach
The University of Michigan Academic Medical Center, Michigan Medicine, is notifying approximately 57,000 people that their personal and health information may have been compromised in a data breach.
The incident stemmed from threat actors gaining access to employee email accounts on May 23 and May 29. The hacked accounts were disabled as soon as the data breach was discovered.
No credit card, debit card or bank account numbers were compromised in the incident, but the National Insurance numbers of four patients were exposed in the hack.
4 – The Land Registry Agency of Greece was breached in a wave of 400 cyber attacks
Greece’s land registry agency announced that it suffered a limited data breach following a wave of 400 cyber-attacks targeting its IT infrastructure over the past week.
The agency said the hackers were able to compromise employee terminals and steal 1.2 gigabytes of data, equivalent to about 0.0006 percent of the government organization’s total data.
According to the report, the stolen data does not contain personal information of citizens, but mainly consists of typical administrative documents, the disclosure of which is not expected to affect the activity of the registry.
5 – Safety equipment giant Cadre Holdings was hit by a cyber attack
Florida-based safety equipment giant Cadre Holdings on Friday disclosed a cyber-attack that affected some of the company’s operations.
Cadre provides safety and survival products for first aid, federal agencies, and personal protection in over 100 countries. Its products include body armor, bomb squad equipment, mandatory equipment and nuclear safety solutions.
The company disclosed in an SEC filing on Friday that it detected unauthorized access to some of its technology systems on July 15.
In response to the incident, several systems were shut down, which affected some of the company’s operations.
“Following the discovery of the incident, the company activated its standard response protocols to contain, assess and remediate the incident, including initiating an investigation with external experts, activating its incident response plan, and notifying federal law enforcement authorities,” Cadre said in the regulatory filing.
India announces unprecedented cyber-attacks: disruption of 19 government websites and large companies
6 – The Indian government announced today that it was the subject of an unprecedented cyber-attack, which disrupted 19 government websites and several major companies, including major airports in the country.
The attack, which authorities described as the deadliest in India’s history, targeted sensitive government sites such as offices and government offices, as well as companies in the telecommunications and transportation sectors. Among the places affected are the airports of Delhi and Mumbai, causing delays and cancellations of several flights.
The government said in an official statement that it was working around the clock to restore services and security systems and was working with cyber security experts to identify the source of the attack and contain it. He called on all institutions to strengthen cyber security measures to deal with future threats.
