Weekly Cybersecurity Report | Week 5, 2025
1 – The New York Blood Bank reports that it is suffering from a ransomware attack that is affecting operations.
According to the organization’s report, the attack began on January 26, 2025, resulting in disruptions in laboratories and the transportation of blood units. In addition, scheduled appointments for those wishing to donate blood have been canceled.
At this stage, the organization announces that there is no expectation of a return to normal and that they are working with ABTM experts to deal with the incident.
2 – The South African Meteorological Service (SAWS) reports the shutdown of some services following a cyber-attack.
According to the report, important services such as weather reports for the country’s aviation and maritime sectors were also affected, as well as the email service and website.
At this stage, no attack group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
3 – Smiths Group, a company engaged in the production and marketing of industrial and military equipment, reports that it is suffering from a cyber-attack.
In a report published by the company on the London Stock Exchange, it reports that it has identified unauthorized parties on the company’s network.
At this stage, it is unclear what the nature of the attack is.
4 – Frederick Health Hospital reports that it is suffering from a ransomware attack.
In a report published by the hospital, it states that it continues to receive patients but that there may be delays in various services due to the attack.
Currently, no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack.
5 – Matagorda County in Texas declares a state of emergency due to a cyber-attack.
The county, which is home to about 40k residents, reports that systems have been down due to a cyber-attack but notes that emergency services were not affected.
Although it is not explicitly stated, it appears that this is a ransomware attack.
6 – The British Museum reports a partial closure of the museum’s operations due to a cyber-attack carried out by a fired employee.
The Guardian’s report indicates that the employee, who was part of the IT department and was recently fired, entered the museum, sabotaged various systems and caused a widespread outage on Friday.
Following the outage, ticket sales were suspended and there were widespread disruptions.
Police were called to the scene and caught the employee, who is now in custody.
7 – The El Cruce hospital in Argentina is suffering from a ransomware attack.
The Medusa group has claimed responsibility for the attack, demanding a ransom of $200,000 to provide a decryption key and prevent the publication of the sensitive information that was stolen.
The hospital’s IT team has taken the website down and is trying to deal with the incident.
8 – Gas Express, a Circle K franchisee with about 160 branches, reported a data leak in its store network.
Circle K is part of Alimentation Couche-Tard, a Canadian company that operates in 31 countries with more than 16,700 stores worldwide.
In the US, it operates at over 7,100 branches under the Circle K and Holiday Stationstores brands.
What information was leaked:
– Names.
– Social Security numbers.
– Driver’s license numbers.
