Information security updates and events from the past week
1 – Interbank, one of the largest financial companies in Peru, reports an information leak after an attacker posted information he stole on various forums.
The attacker claims to have 3.7TB of information which he publishes after Interbank refused to pay the ransom.
The company confirmed the attack and claimed that the stolen information includes customer information, because of the attack there were temporary disruptions in the application and the company’s various services.
2 – The French communications company Free reports a cyber incident after attackers published the company’s information for sale on various forums.
The report comes after the attacker published 43GB of information he stole.
The company states that it has not yet notified affected customers but will do so as soon as possible.
Free is the second largest telecom company in France.
3 – Disruptions in some airports in Mexico following a ransomware attack.
The Ransomhub group is the one responsible for the attack on the OMA company that operates several airports in Mexico.
According to the company, following the attack they switched to backup systems and at this stage some of the screens at the airports do not display the flight schedule. However, landings and takeoffs are operating as normal.
4 – The second largest Internet provider in France, Free, confirms a cyber attack
A major Internet Service Provider (ISP) in France, Free, confirmed over the weekend that hackers broke into its systems and stole personal customer information.
The company, which it says had more than 22.9 million mobile and landline subscribers at the end of June, is the second largest telecommunications company in France and a subsidiary of Iliad Group, the sixth largest mobile operator in Europe by number of subscribers.
Free has since filed a criminal complaint with the public prosecutor and notified the French National Commission for Information Technology and Civil Liberties (CNIL) and the National Agency for the Security of Information Systems (ANSSI) about the incident.
5 – The Arizona pharmacy serving over 40,000 patients a day is notifying customers of a data breach affecting their personal information.
According to the health organization, it detected suspicious activity on its network on August 8, 2024.
An investigation revealed a week later that before the cyber-attack was detected, the hackers obtained files containing personal information from OPPC systems.
Compromised data includes names, residential information, medical records, and prescription and diagnostic information. For some of the affected people, Social Security numbers were also taken, the organization said.
6 – American Water, a water and wastewater services company from New Jersey that operates in 14 states and manages 500 water systems, reported a cyber-attack and data breach that could affect the private information of up to 14 million customers.
On October 7, 2024, American Water announced in a Form 8-K filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it had experienced a cyber security incident. The company has closed its MyWater customer portal and is suspending billing until further notice.
