2 – The US government reveals potential security risks in Chinese-made smart vehicles.

The main concern is that these vehicles may be vulnerable to remote hacker attacks due to their connection to the Internet, the vehicle software may contain security weaknesses and that the Chinese government likes to spy, and it may use the smart vehicles to gather intelligence.

The US government’s investigation focuses on three areas:

  •   Security hacks that allow you to control the vehicle remotely.
  •   Theft of personal data from the drivers.
  •   Government espionage by China.

The National Security Agency (NSA) is involved in the investigation and warns of the potential risks.

3 – The European retail giant Pepco loses 15 million euros in a phishing attack

The UK-based company reported losing about $16.8 million in cash because of a “sophisticated phishing attack.”

“At this point, it appears that the incident did not involve information or data of customers, suppliers or colleagues,” the group said.

“The group takes financial control and IT security very seriously and is currently conducting a group review of all systems and processes to secure the business more firmly going forward.”

The Pepco Group owns 3,600 Pepco stores spread across 19 European countries with more than 30 million customers every month.

Based on the description of the incident and the amount lost, it may have been subjected to a BEC attack, where attackers use compromised email accounts to trick organization employees into transferring funds

The FBI reported that last year BEC losses totaled more than $50 billion across nearly 278,000 incidents.

4 – Golden Corral restaurant chain data breach affects 183,000 people

American restaurant chain Golden Corral disclosed a data breach after attackers behind a cyber-attack in August stole personal information of over 180,000 people.

In return, Golden Corral offers an all-you-can-eat buffet and grill at 298 locations across 43 US states and Puerto Rico (operations are suspended at 24 locations for unknown reasons).

In a press release issued today, the company said attackers had access to its systems between August 11 and August 15 and stole the sensitive data of “current and former employees and beneficiaries.”
