Weekly Cybersecurity Report | Week 51, 2024<\/h2>\n

1 – Regional Car, a Nebraska-based health insurance company, reports a data breach involving 225,000 policyholders.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The company says the breach occurred in September after an unknown party gained unauthorized access.<\/p>\n

(No ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack, and the database has not been seen online, suggesting a ransom was likely paid.)<\/p>\n

“This is a historic cyber event. Not only because of the privacy of residents, but also because the payment and claims processing systems, which are a significant part of the medical payments processing industry, were down for a long time.”<\/p>\n

2 – Ransomhub names Australian company Medisecure as a victim.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

In May, the company reported a ransomware attack that compromised 12.9 million medical records.<\/p>\n

Now, Ransomhub claims to have 1.9TB of data from the company’s network.<\/p>\n

3 – The University of Texas Medical Center reports a patient data leak following a ransomware attack.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The center’s official report states that during September 2024, an unauthorized party accessed the corporate network and stole information from approximately 1.4 million patients.<\/p>\n

The stolen information includes, among other things, personal details and sensitive medical information.<\/p>\n

The Interlock attack group claimed responsibility for the attack, claiming to have stolen 2.6TB of information.<\/p>\n

4 – Phreesia, a company that provides technological services to the healthcare sector, reports a data leak involving approximately 910,000 patients following a hack of a subsidiary.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A report states that the subsidiary ConnectOnCall, which provides various medical services through a call center, identified that an unauthorized party accessed the company’s databases between February and May 2024.<\/p>\n

Immediately upon detection, Phreesia disabled ConnectOnCall services until the investigation is complete.<\/p>\n

The leaked information includes sensitive personal information<\/p>\n

5 – Telecom Namibia is suffering from a ransomware attack carried out by the Hunters group.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The company’s CEO reports that they are doing everything they can to deal with the attack.<\/p>\n

The Hunters group claims that it stole hundreds of GB of information, including sensitive information.<\/p>\n

Telecom Namibia is a government-controlled company that provides communication services to hundreds of thousands of citizens in the state of Namibia.<\/p>\n

6 – The state of Rhode Island in the US reports that attackers broke into internal systems and stole sensitive information from residents.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

An official state report claims that information about the attack was provided to the state by Deloitte.<\/p>\n

A few days after the initial report, the attackers shared additional information with the company, which was passed on to state officials who reviewed and confirmed the attack.<\/p>\n

At this point, no ransomware group has claimed responsibility for the attack.<\/p>\n

7 – Auto parts giant LKQ reports that its Canadian business unit was hacked, and attackers stole information.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

The company reports to the US stock exchange that the attack and attempts to deal with it are causing disruptions to business operations.<\/p>\n

8 – Japanese gaming company Kadokawa Games pays ransom to Russian hackers<\/strong><\/h3>\n

A major Japanese media company known for producing video games has paid Russian-linked hackers nearly $3 million after a data breach earlier this year.<\/p>\n

The attackers initially demanded a ransom of $8.25 million. However, the company said it could not pay more than $3 million due to strict compliance measures.<\/p>\n

News of the payment came as Sony announced it was considering acquiring the company.<\/p>\n
